Home MenuEMS Services Provided
Galveston County Health District EMS provides a variety of services to the communities we service covering all aspects of emergency medical services.
Primary 911 emergency coverage
Ambulances dedicated to providing 911 emergency coverage are staffed at the Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU), which is the highest care designation for a ground ambulance under the Texas Department of State Health Services. These units are equipped to handle any type of medical or traumatic injury that may occur whether it is one patient or multiple patients. The service area for GCHD EMS is unique in that it includes rural areas, urban areas, beaches, and the waterways surrounding Galveston County. These challenges are overcome thanks to our partner agencies which include:
- Bacliff Volunteer Fire Department
- Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department
- Hitchcock Volunteer Fire Department
- Jamaica Beach Volunteer Fire Department
- Galveston Island Beach Patrol
- Galveston Fire Department
- San Leon Volunteer Fire Department
- Tiki Island Volunteer Fire Department
- United States Coast Guard
Non-emergency interfacility transport services
GCHD EMS operates a non-emergency transport service which provides transport for those patients who are bed bound and/or require specialized care during transport. Our ambulances utilized for these transports are designated BLS with MICU capable and can provide Critical Care Transport services to those patients in need. Whether it is transporting a patient home from the hospital, working with the NICU team from UTMB to transport a sick newborn, or transporting a patient between ICUs; GCHD EMS can handle the transport. To schedule a non-emergency transport please contact our NET Dispatch at 409.938.2424.

Disaster and evacuation response
As an agency that serves a community along the coast, preparing for disasters, evacuations and providing service during a disaster are something that we are constantly preparing for. GCHD EMS is an active participant in disaster response working alongside multiple county agencies including the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management. During a disaster GCHD EMS would work alongside local, county and state agencies to facilitate the evacuation of Galveston County in the event of a tropical storm.
GCHD EMS is also a member of Emergency Medical Task Force 6 (EMTF-6) and responds to disasters throughout the State of Texas when requested. This is done to not only provide assistance to our fellow Texans, but to also to better prepare and plan for disasters that may strike Galveston County.
