People bring pets to the Galveston County Animal Resource Center from all over Galveston County. We check all animals for any form of identification, including collars and tags, tattoos and microchips. If any identification is found on a stray animal, our staff will make every effort to contact the owner to let them know their pet is at the shelter.

Lost a pet?

Discovering your pet is lost can be very emotional and we love helping lead to happy reunions.

Often times your pet may still be near your home. Talk to your neighbors and physically search for your pet. You may also want to post signs in your neighborhood.

If you can't find your pet, come to the ARC as soon possible. We can look to see if your pet was brought in as a stray by a citizen or animal control officer. Because we receive so many animals, they may only be held for three full business days after intake. It is best if you visit the shelter at least every other day to look for your lost pet.

Found a pet

Most found animals are owned by someone. Please do not simply "keep" an animal that you find without making a real effort to track down the owner. Talk to your neighbors and post signs in the neighborhood.

If you bring a found pet to us please provide us with all the information you can - the more information you provide about the animal, the better.

If you have found a pet and wish to keep it while searching a little longer for the owner, please call 409.948.2485 to submit a found animal report.

Reclaiming your pet

When you visit the shelter to look for your pet, be prepared to provide proof of ownership and proof of a current rabies vaccination. You will be required to pay applicable impound and boarding fees. If your pet is not currently registered you will be required to pay the applicable pet registration fee. Fee information is available here.
