Mindfulness can be practiced by anyone from children to senior citizens. It is a helpful tool to use while focusing on the present moment and accepting what you may be feeling. It is the art of paying attention in the present moment with openness and curiosity.

How can mindfulness help me? It can be utilized throughout the day in dealing with stressful situations by reducing emotionally charged reactions. Mindfulness can help us with work, family and relationships!

How is mindfulness practiced and achieved? There are hundreds of techniques, but here are three that encompass the spirit of mindfulness:

Mindful reading – Find a book that you want to read and allow yourself to become caught up the words by finding a quiet place to read, taking your time with each phrase and reflecting on their meaning.

Mindful writing – Journal what your strongest feeling were for the day. This will provide self-exploration. Try it for a week.

Mindful listening – This may be the most important way to practice mindfulness. This technique is the most passive tool, but most imperative to use.  Listening to ourselves is as important as really listening (and not reacting) to others.  Maybe upon waking up tomorrow morning, note the first sounds you hear before getting out of bed. Take just a few minutes to really listen to your surroundings.
